As the political machinery of Saint Lucia begins to hum in preparation for the upcoming general election, the United Workers Party (UWP) and the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) are gearing up for what promises to be a spirited campaign season. With the UWP holding only two parliamentary seats and nearing the completion of its candidate slate, and the SLP, with its 13 seats, still finalising candidates for Choiseul and Micoud South, the stage is set for what is often referred to as “the silly season.” But let us not allow this season to devolve into mere theatrics. Instead, let it be a time of reflection, accountability, and a renewed commitment to the principles of good governance.
Good governance is not just a lofty ideal but the bedrock of a thriving nation. It ensures transparency, accountability, and the equitable distribution of resources. It fosters trust between the government and its people, paving the way for sustainable development and social harmony. Without it, Saint Lucia risks sliding further into underdevelopment, with the dreams and aspirations of its citizens left unfulfilled.
The people of Saint Lucia must demand more from their leaders. Politicians must be held to the highest standards of integrity, honesty, and humanity. They must prioritise the welfare of the nation over personal gain, demonstrating a genuine love for the country rather than a love for power. Leaders of substance-men and women of unshakable moral character-are what Saint Lucia needs to navigate the challenges of the modern world.
Equally, the electorate has a crucial role to play. Saint Lucians must approach this election with a discerning eye, questioning the promises made by politicians and seeking the truth behind their words. Blind allegiance and unquestioning acceptance have no place in a democracy. An informed and engaged citizenry is the cornerstone of a healthy political system. So, to all Saint Lucians, especially those of voting age, read, analyse and question the words and actions of today’s politicians.
As the campaign season unfolds, let us remember that the true measure of a leader is not in their rhetoric but in their actions. Saint Lucia deserves leaders who embody the principles of good governance and who are uncorrupted and unwavering in their commitment to the nation’s progress. And it is up to the people to demand nothing less.
The future of Saint Lucia depends on the choices we make today. The five years of governance of the United Workers Party (2016 – 2021) is not so far back that we have forgotten how they govern. The Saint Lucia Labour Party’s handling of the reins of power is now in our faces, so we cannot say we do not know what they did or did not do when the general election is called. There is enough political fodder for Saint Lucians to sift through, analyse, question, and demand answers to before voting for a candidate simply because this person represents a certain political party.
If ever Saint Lucians must choose a time to stand up for good governance and political candidates of integrity, that time is now.
Saint Lucians should no longer choose a government based solely on party lines. History has shown this type of voting to be counterproductive. Let us choose integrity, accountability, and a shared vision for a brighter tomorrow. Let us look for policy rather than insults. We should demand respect for each of the candidates, notwithstanding their different perspectives on policy.
